Malaga will be one of the provinces where we will be able to enjoy two of the three eclipses that will be visible in Spain between 2026 and 2028.

Although it seems that we are way ahead of schedule, time flies. And an astronomical event of this kind will attract thousands and thousands of people eager to experience it first hand.

And even more so considering that it will take place in the middle of the high season. So, if you are planning to come: Make your travel plans well in advance to secure your flight, hotel and car hire in Malaga at a good price.

Total eclipse 12 August 2026

This total eclipse will be visible in northern Spain: Asturias, Cantabria, La Rioja, Balearic Islands. Galicia, Castilla y León, Madrid, Basque Country, Navarra, Aragón, Catalonia, Castilla La Mancha and Valencia. It also coincides with the peak of the Perseids.

In Malaga it will be visible as a very deep partial eclipse, i.e. it will reach between 90% and 99%.

The phenomenon will begin in the late afternoon of the 12th August 2026, at around 7:30 pm, reaching totality at 8:30 pm. At that time, the sun will already be quite low on the horizon, so you need to find an an unobstructed viewing site. The total duration of the total eclipse will be 1h44m.

At the time of writing this article, the date still seems a long way off: In Malaga and the Costa del Sol we will be able to enjoy a total eclipse. In fact ‘astronomical tourists’ and amateurs from all over the world already have the date on their calendars.

During this impressive celestial spectacle it will be night in Malaga and the temperature will drop by 4 to 5 degrees for several minutes in the morning.

Considering that it is the middle of summer and the skies are always clear and the sun is extremely bright, this phenomenon will be even more impressive, and no one will want to miss it!

The eclipse begins at 9:41 am, reaching total eclipse at 10:48 am. Although the eclipse as such does not even last 2 minutes, we have no doubt that it will take your breath away. The astronomical event will end at 12:02 pm.

It will be visible in the southernmost areas of the provinces of Malaga, Granada and Almeria, Cadiz and Ceuta.

In January an annular eclipse will cross the peninsula and will be fully visible in Seville, Malaga, Murcia and Valencia.

Unlike the total eclipse, in the annular eclipse the moon does not completely cover the sun. This creates a ring effect around the moon by the sun’s rays.

Although the sky does not darken as much as in a total eclipse, you should nevertheless wear protective glasses, which we will discuss in the next section.

The annular eclipse in Malaga will begin at 16:36 and reach its maximum point at 17:54. It will end at around 18:33 h.

Best places to observe the eclipses in Malaga

For an astronomical event of such magnitude there will be plenty of offer where and how to enjoy the celestial spectacle. All along the Costa del Sol, many establishments are preparing ‘Star Parties’.

You don’t have a car and you are in Malaga city? Then the best place is the Gibralfaro mountain, just a short distance from the centre. But this means also that you will see the celestial spectacle together with thousands of people.

You can get up to Monte Calamorro, 800 metres above sea level, in a comfortable cable car. From there you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Malaga coastline.

Due to its proximity to the popular coastal town of Benalmadena, this will also be an option that many will take advantage of.

Nerja and Maro Cliffs

The Balcon de Europa will be another crowded spot from where many people will be watching the celestial spectacle.

However, a few kilometres away is the natural park Cerro Gordo, where you can surely have a little more peace and quiet to enjoy the astronomical event.

Torcal de Antequera

The natural site of El Torcal de Antequera is located 1,200 metres above sea level, less than an hour from Malaga.

This natural enclave is worth a visit in itself for its impressive karst formations that resemble a fantasy landscape. There are two short and easy routes through the terrain.

In the Torcal there is a visitor centre, a restaurant and an astronomical observatory, called Astrotorcal.

How to safely observe a solar eclipse

It is inadvisable to view eclipses without proper eye protection or with standard sunglasses, as the sun’s rays can damage eyesight.

There are special sunglasses that have a number of features to protect the retina from solar radiation. Choose those that comply with the eye safety standard called ISO 12312-2. Those that are not ISO 12312-2 are fakes and will not provide sufficient protection.
