Gazpacho Festival – Alfarnatejo

This tiny white village of less than 400 inhabitants is one of the highest villages in the province of Malaga. It is situated in the mountainous region of Axarquia, 850 metres above sea level.

On the first Saturday in August Alfarnatejo celebrates its fiesta dedicated to Gazpacho.

For those who don’t know it, it is a traditional Andalusian cool “energy drink” that is typically prepared to combat the high temperature in the summer months.

The main ingredients of this “cold soup” are tomato, green pepper, cucumber, onion and garlic, vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and salt. In Alfarnatejo it is prepared in a slightly different way, adding a special touch with fresh Moroccan mint.

If you want to try it, it will be handed out on Saturday from 1.30 pm.

  • When: 3 August

But that’s not all! Although the main attraction is on Saturday, in the gastronomic sense, the festival will be held from 1 to 3 August 2024 with an extensive programme.

Día de la Uva Moscatel - Iznate

Another charming white village in the Axarquia, but much closer to the coast is Iznate.

As well as being a typical white village, Iznate is well known for the production of muscatel grapes for sultanas and wine. During this festival the village pays homage to its grapes and celebrates a gastronomic route through its streets and corners. Stroll through the village and discover stalls with different dishes and typical products of the region.

The festival takes place on the first Saturday in August and starts around 8 pm when it starts to cool down. There will also be a craft market and live music.

The third white village in the Axarquia where we can enjoy gastronomic festivals in August is Competa.

Situated 630 metres above sea level, it is a natural balcony with stunning views. This land has been dedicated to the cultivation of vines for centuries.

Every 15th August, the village pays homage to its vine growers with the tasting of migas with cod, arriera salad, muscatel grapes and local wine.
