Gastronomy – Tomato Huevo de Toro, the most expensive in Spain

Today we present one of the star products of Malaga’s gastronomy, the Tomato Huevo de Toro.

As many may know, Malaga’s fertile soils, combined with the mild climate, offer an incredible variety of fruit and vegetables all year round. Combined with fish and seafood, Malaga has the best of Mediterranean cuisine.

One of the star delicacies, which is only available in season, is the so-called Huevo de Toro tomato. It is produced in the Guadalhorce Valley, also called “the orchard of Malaga”, a few kilometres from Malaga.

Spain’s most expensive tomato

Why is this tomato the most expensive on the market? This tomato stands out for many reasons:

  • Their normal weight is between 300 and 600 grams, but there are also those weighing more than 1 kilo.
  • The price of the Huevo de Toro tomato is around three euros per kilo if it is bought directly from the producer. In local markets the price is 5 to 6 euros per kilo.
  • Its unique flavour.
  • Because of its thin skin, harvesting, packaging and marketing is very delicate. Therefore, it is not suitable for long transports, reducing its use to the immediate surroundings.
  • In other words, it is very difficult to taste this typical delicacy from Malaga in other parts of the world.
  • Interestingly, during the Huevo Toro Tomato market an auction of the best tomatoes takes place. Last summer this auction fetched 4,000 euros, a bid that was made by Pepe Cobos from Bodegas El Pimpi.
