The region of Campo de Gibraltar is situated in southern Spain and is made up of seven municipalities: Algeciras, Los Barrios, La Línea, San Roque, and Tarifa. Many of these municipalities were formed after the loss of Gibraltar to the Anglo-Dutch armies, which was eventually handed over in its entirety to Great Britain. The former inhabitants settled in what later became Algeciras, San Roque, and Los Barrios.
Campo de Gibraltar borders other Andalusian regions: La Janda, the Serranía de Ronda, and the Western Costa del Sol.
The history of this region dates back to the prehistoric period, with archaeological sites showing significant activity from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age, including funerary complexes like the necropolis of ‘Los Algarbes’, dating back to 3000 BCE in Tarifa.
The region experienced significant cultural and economic growth with the settlement of the Turdetani and later Roman settlements, who traded throughout the Mediterranean with available raw materials. The fall of the Roman Empire and the arrival of the Paleo-Christian barbarian tribes plunged the region into a deep decline, from which it did not recover until the arrival of the Arabs and the foundation of al-Andalus.
The arrival of the Christian armies led to the construction of fortresses and watchtowers until the region was entirely conquered and the Arabs expelled.
The municipalities that arose due to the British capture of Gibraltar attempted to besiege Gibraltar to re-conquer the city. From this period, many fortifications remain in good condition and can be visited. During the 18th century, the cities of San Roque, Los Barrios, Algeciras, and La Línea, formed by the former inhabitants of Gibraltar, became independent.
The Campo de Gibraltar region is connected via the A-7 motorway to the entire Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz, extending to the city of Cádiz. If you are coming from Ronda, the A-405 road allows you to reach the region’s interior.
