Huelva has many natural spaces; it’s a place to discover and with emblematic spots like the area of Rio Tinto, the internationally famous river of Huelva.
Rio Tinto, known as Rio Luxia in the past, has its source in the mountains of Sierra de Padre Caro near the village of Nerva through which it flows.
This river is known for its intense red colour which is given by iron and copper deposits, being the Mines of Rio Tinto already exploited by the Iberians, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs.
Rio Tinto is where NASA conducts studies of microorganisms in the water because the conditions would be very similar to what would be on Mars.
