Estimated Time: Approximately four hours
The route begins at the Cathedral of Huelva in Plaza de la Merced. From there, head down Independence Avenue, enjoying the beautiful architecture even if it's not usually to your taste.
Upon reaching the Quarter of Carmen, cross to the left towards the Quarter of Navidad, marking the beginning of the Marismas de Odiel. This initial stretch may show signs of neglect, including some litter, but it quickly gives way to the stunning marshland scenery.
As you approach the banks of the Odiel River, you'll traverse marsh vegetation and follow the river's edge. Occasionally, you'll need to navigate through channels and past wire fences, adding a bit of adventure to your trek.
About five kilometres in, the river narrows, and the banks draw closer together. This is where you'll encounter the first eucalyptus trees, a notable change in the landscape.
Continuing along the river, you'll eventually reach the village of Gibraleón, a great place to end your hike. The water here is distinctly reddish and has an acidic taste, a unique characteristic of the area. Despite the presence of some litter, the journey through the beautiful forest makes it well worth the effort.
The Marismas de Odiel offer a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance, making it a must-visit for trekking enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a scenic walk, this route provides a rewarding experience in the heart of Huelva.
