This tour will start in Granada at 2500 meters altitude, in the Hoya de la Mora Hostel, a place from where we will start and park the car since the rest of the way has to be done on foot.
The shelter of Elorrieta, our destination, was built in 1933 at almost 3200 meters above sea level and is currently in a state of complete abandonment. After starting the route where we left our vehicle, we follow the path that crosses the road several times until we reach a junction that gives us two options:
Following this path toward Borreguiles station will reach the source of the river Monachil. If we make this route in winter we must be careful with the ski trails in order not to run into any skier as we go towards Coyado de las Yeguas, from which we descend to the lake of the same name after passing by the source of the river Dilar.
From Laguna de las Yeguas, we head south along a path that ascends steeply and takes us to the remains of an ancient glacier. From this point we take a path that zigzags and that leads to Elorrieta Refuge, from where we will have a breath-taking view of the valley of Lanjaron, the great Mulhacen and Veleta. During our tour we are likely to see wildlife such as mountain goats and fauna as the Snow Star.
It's advisable to carry enough water, wear appropriate hiking shoes, and check the weather forecast before starting the hike. Also, be mindful of the altitude and take breaks as needed.
