The Vereda de la Estrella is a popular hiking trail in Granada, offering a delightful experience in the northern Sierra Nevada. Originally created in 1890 to connect with the mines in the Genil valley, the trail runs parallel to the river.
The trail begins near Barranco de San Juan Inn, once there was a tram station. Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the highest peaks in Sierra Nevada, including Alcazaba and Mulhacen.
The well-marked trail starts with a steep climb but soon becomes more comfortable with a gentle ascent. Following the path, hikers will encounter the remains of an old abandoned mine. Just 15 minutes further, the old settlement of the mine workers of La Estrella can be found, leading to a bridge crossing the River Guarnon with beautiful views of the Veleta glacier.
Close to this point is the Cueva Secreta, a cave worth visiting.
For those seeking a more challenging hike, the trail extends approximately 4.5 hours from Cueva Secreta to the peak of Mulhacen. This section is recommended only for experienced hikers due to its difficulty. Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Sierra Nevada.
After crossing the River Guarnon, the path ascends towards Mulhacen, disappearing in the Valle de las Viboras, where the ascent becomes significantly more challenging. Hikers will reach Laguna de la Mosca, a popular summer camping spot, before continuing the ascent to the summit of Mulhacen, which takes about 2 hours.
The views from Mulhacen are stunning, encompassing Sierra Nevada, Alpujarra, the sea, and even the mountains of Africa on a clear day. You can check the route to the Mulhacen if you feel like trying that hiking route also.
Drive towards Güejar Sierra and follow the signs for 'Vereda de la Estrella'. Park at the restaurant Maitena, or continue to the parking lot next to 'Restaurante Barranco de San Juan' to save some time.
