This peak of over 3000 meters above sea level is one of the main peaks of Sierra Nevada and is located near the town of Jerez del Marquesado and the peaks of Mulhacén and Alcazaba.
To begin the tour, we will depart from Jerez del Marquesado from where we will go by road to Refugio Postero Alto at 1880 meters height.
This shelter has the necessary services, barracks, wireless coverage and free WIFI connection. The shelter can be reached on foot or by car from Jerez del Marquesado; to this village, we get from Granada by taking the direction to Guadix.
The road or driveway to the shelter is unpaved, so depending on the weather it can be in good or bad condition, in which case we can leave the car at the beginning of the track just before entering the firebreak that can be covered in snow or mud; since the beginning of the firebreak it's about a 30-minute walk.
Opposite the shelter, we find a trail that we have to follow until a junction; taking the left one we get to Puerto de Trevélez and taking the right trail we'll get in about 6 hours to Picon.
For the return, we take the same trail we have taken to get there.
If we choose this route during the snow season, we recommend going well prepared since we find the presence of ice patches that necessitate the use of proper footwear. We can also do parts of the route using skis.
Recommendation: For the uninitiated in the mountains, we recommend this route only in summer as the weather changes can significantly increase the difficulty.
